Dental Exams & Cleanings Help Maintain Oral Health
Your Dental Exam and Cleaning Appointment
Your dental exam and cleaning are typically completed in one appointment. During this visit, Dr. Turner will perform a thorough examination, and one of our skilled hygienists will conduct the cleaning (dental prophylaxis). Here’s what you can expect:
Radiographs (X-Rays): Dr. Turner may order x-rays to detect cavities, bone loss, or any other potential issues, such as pathological lesions.
Oral Cancer Screening: Dr. Turner will carefully inspect the head and neck area for lumps, discolorations, or other signs of oral cancer.
Dental Exam: Using a dental probe, he will thoroughly examine your teeth and any existing restorations.
Periodontal Screening: The doctor or hygienist will assess your gums for early signs of gum disease.
Oral Hygiene Assessment: The hygienist will evaluate your brushing and flossing techniques and offer personalized recommendations to improve your oral care routine.
Scaling: Specialized instruments will be used to remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth.
Polishing: Your teeth will be polished using a dental handpiece and pumice-based paste, leaving them smooth and gleaming.
Fluoride Treatment: To help strengthen your teeth and prevent decay, a professional fluoride treatment will be applied.
At the end of your appointment, we’ll schedule your next exam and cleaning or arrange for any additional treatments you may need.
How Often Should You Schedule Exams and Cleanings?
Routine exams and cleanings are essential for maintaining your oral health, but the ideal frequency can vary. Dr. Turner and his team will create a personalized schedule based on your individual needs. Generally, we recommend that patients of all ages visit the dentist twice a year—starting at the eruption of the first tooth or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
However, some patients may need more frequent checkups, especially if they:
Have an existing oral health condition
Develop plaque and tartar quickly
Use tobacco products (smoking, chewing, etc.)
Have diabetes or other conditions that increase the risk of oral health issues
